COVER UPDATES: STRANGELY ENOUGH, PART TWO!

Another edition of C.B. Colby's influential Forteana title Strangely Enough!, this time from Popular Library using their uncredited house style of cameo illustrations.

Courtesy those scalawags at (of course) the Popular Library, 1959 (original pub. 1940).

COVER UPDATES: WISDOM OF THE ANCIENTS

Some old guff to ring in the new year, with this Corgi Books reprint of T. Lobsang Rampa's occult dictionary. The back is just a list of all the Rampa titles from Corgi, which must have been selling like hotcakes given the constant reissues.

COVER UPDATES: THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE MYSTERY - SOLVED

Dig the full page ads for a twofer of WWII merchant marine tales from authors Paul Lund and Harry Ludlum, plus a corker of a back page selection including The Rats, Carrie, and a little paranormal thriller called Thin Air ... more about that last title some other time ...

This copy also yielded a coupon for 42 cents off a bacon cheeseburger sandwich from Hardee's, valid only at the Manitowoc and Two Rivers locations! Turns out those towns are in Wisconsin, and neither location is extant - which is fine, because the offer expired February 15, 1987!

COVER UPDATES: FLYING SAUCERS ARE HOSTILE

A spaced out cover by UK publisher Tandem for Steiger and Whritenour's Flying Saucers Are Hostile, matching their edition of Steiger's Strangers From the Skies. Reprint copyright 1972, original Tandem edition from 1970, original Award Books printing from 1967.

COVER UPDATES: UFO - HO HO!

Risque reprint of Joseph Farris' cartoon compilation, courtesy Belmont-Tower Books, 1970. This reprint clumsily adapts one of his toons for the new cover art. In Farris' original version it seemed that the lovely space giantess was the one commenting, however the new cover version makes it explicit with a word bubble that it's one of the lil' astronauts lamenting their lot. A closer inspection of Farris' version confirms that it is definitely one of the men speaking, resetting the scene to the default male POV instead of the whimsical, winsome perspective that I'd originally assumed.

COVER UPDATES: STRANGE POWERS OF E.S.P.

Here's a slightly unsettling hippie/boho cover for Brad Steiger's Strange Powers of E.S.P. by the Australian publisher Scripts, who it seems tended to pulpy fare ... just perfect for Steiger! Dig those smutty back page adverts, including two corkers "by an Australian author - Stuart Hall."

COVER UPDATES: THE FLYING SAUCER STORY

A cool tropical vision for this later UK edition of Brinsley Le Poer Trench's UFO psychohistory The Flying Saucer Story, advertised with new updated material! Courtesy Tandem Books, 1973 (original pub. 1966).

COVER UPDATES: THE UNKNOWN and STRANGERS FROM THE SKIES

A striking edition of Brad Steiger's early Fortean potpourri, The Unknown, from the Popular Library. Cool font, beautiful rich purple color, and sub-human gorilla-like creatures! Can you explain it?

And across the pond, a lovely sci-fi painting wraps around this 1970 edition of Steiger's Ufological mixer Strangers From the Skies, from UK publisher Tandem Books. Both titles originally published 1966.

COVER UPDATES: MYSTERIOUS VISITORS and GOD DRIVES A FLYING SAUCER

A very cool Chris Foss style flying saucer on this 1975 edition of Mysterious Visitors by Brinsley Le Poer Trench from Pan ...

And a hazy portrait of the heavens for this 1971 edition of God Drives a Flying Saucer by R.L. Dione from Corgi Books. UK publishers loved lavishing lush paintings on their paranormal cheapies!

COVER UPDATES: EDGAR CAYCE ON ATLANTIS

Today we've got a terrific triple feature of cover updates for the very silly Edgar Cayce on Atlantis, by Edgar Evans Cayce! It must have been a hot seller because reprints and multiple editions abound. Up first is this very cool 1968 edition from Warner Books ... dig the slick graphic presentation of Egyptian/Mayan brotherhood, just a taste of some of the lost civilization themes inside.

Next we have the sixth printing from the Paperback Library, from 1969. We get some cool watery ruins and a stock shot of the man himself looking thoughtfully psychedelic, as he did on so many Paperback Library titles.

Last and definitely least, here's a very plain, disappointing tenth printing from the Paperback Library, from 1971! I can see this copy languishing on a grocery store spinner rack, counting on some bored housewife to shrug and toss it in the cart on her way to checkout. It was long ago and far away ...

COVER UPDATES: WISDOM OF THE ANCIENTS and LIVING WITH THE LAMA

A double dose of T. Lobsang Rampa today, beginning with the Bantam Books edition of Rampa's occult guide from 1978 (original pub. 1970). "He survived torture, imprisonment, starvation," but not really.

And another Corgi edition of Living With The Lama from 1968, which plays coy with the concept of Rampa translating his cat's biography from "the Siamese Cat language" (original pub. 1964).

Cute logo!
