MAPS OF THE UNKNOWN: Bermuda Triangle Redux

Another ephemeral entry from Max Toth's delirious, dizzying doorstopper Pyramid Prophecies. The Bermuda Triangle was a '70s hotspot for Atlantean shenanigans what with the mysterious Bimini Wall ... or was it the Bimini Road? In either case, the rocks were connected to predictions by Edgar Cayce on Atlantis' imminent resurgence off Bimini, in the far flung year 1969! Further developments detailed by Toth include the discovery of a gigantic underwater pyramid by one Ray Brown while diving off the Bahamas, who explored the pyramid and surrounding ruins in a dreamlike haze and managed to bring a "pyramid crystal" back to the surface with him! Tony O'Connell's Atlantipedia website is a fantastic resource for these and other Atlantean tall tales, and wouldn't you know it seems like ol' Brown wasn't quite on the up and up?

Toth didn't have any qualms about Brown's story though, and it makes for one more juicy tidbit in his righteous stew of Pyramid Prophecies. Ray Brown and "his famous crystal" were also featured (alongside Leonard Nimoy's season four fashion) in the 1980 In Search Of ... episode The Bimini Wall:

The snake, the rat, the cat, the dog

How you gon' see him if you living in the fog?

French New Wave filmmaker (!) and author Paula Delsol presents the ancient arts of the Asiatic necromancers in this handy guide to CHINESE ASTROLOGY! It's translated from the French by Peter and Tanya Leslie, with the English text retaining a lovely blend of the French and Chinese origins. The very charming drawings are by Michel Brunet:

For us younger readers, the Tiger's caption is a take on the midcentury Exxon slogan "put a tiger in your tank!" This guide features the Cat instead of the Rabbit: nowadays the Chinese lunar calendar uses the Rabbit, while the Vietnamese uses the Cat. Delsol says the Japanese favor the Rabbit as well. Ins and outs, odds and evens, swings and roundabouts! 2023 is the year of the Cat/Rabbit, by the way, even though this book didn't project its years out far enough to see - the far flung year of 1996 is as far as we go.

The Dog is a worrier, neurotic and introverted, but also presents "the noblest traits of human nature." Delsol's example is Brigitte Bardot's (born in 1934) campaigns for animal rights. The Pig is chivalrous, scrupulous, a pacifist - but not a weakling! He's often a sensualist. Beware: the Goat will take advantage of him.

Every old astrology guide needed a section on famous people and their signs. The Cat is represented with some heavy hitters in Fidel Castro, Joseph Stalin, Queen Victoria, and Confucius! Would you believe that Jesus Christ was a Dragon? Chinese astrology comes across as very practical, with Delsol outlining its applications in business, relationships, and career choice. It's an attractive system that lends itself to the self help genre, no doubt! Delsol also includes a guide to interpreting how your traditional western sign affects your Chinese sign. For example, if the Cat is a Scorpio? "They're a witch's cat. Watch out for sorcery and spells!" If the Dog is an Aries? "Dog-of-war! Launches himself into the unknown."

COVER UPDATES: EDGAR CAYCE ON ATLANTIS

Today we've got a terrific triple feature of cover updates for the very silly Edgar Cayce on Atlantis, by Edgar Evans Cayce! It must have been a hot seller because reprints and multiple editions abound. Up first is this very cool 1968 edition from Warner Books ... dig the slick graphic presentation of Egyptian/Mayan brotherhood, just a taste of some of the lost civilization themes inside.

Next we have the sixth printing from the Paperback Library, from 1969. We get some cool watery ruins and a stock shot of the man himself looking thoughtfully psychedelic, as he did on so many Paperback Library titles.

Last and definitely least, here's a very plain, disappointing tenth printing from the Paperback Library, from 1971! I can see this copy languishing on a grocery store spinner rack, counting on some bored housewife to shrug and toss it in the cart on her way to checkout. It was long ago and far away ...

The co-authors conjure up an out-of-control spacecraft's nuclear overload for some light science fiction on top of everything else. Recommended.
